William & Mary Downs Drexel in Williamsburg, 72-59

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William & Mary broke open a close game with a 15-2 run over the last 6:47 of the contest and defeated Drexel, 72-59, on Saturday afternoon. The Tribe won its 12th straight game at Kaplan Arena and improved to 10-4 in CAA play and 16-11 overall. The Dragons fell to 13-14 and are now 5-9 in the CAA. Shane Blakeney led the Dragons with 15 points off the bench.
The Dragons and Tribe played an exciting back and forth first half with the Dragons holding a five-point lead at intermission, 43-58. The Dragons shot 61 percent in the first 20 minutes and were 7-for-15 from long range. Drexel led the majority of the first half and missed just three shots inside the arc during the opening 20. Blakeney had an outstanding first half with 11 points and made all four of his shots, including three 3-pointers. William & Mary was also 7-for-15 from deep and the Tribe shot 50 percent overall in the opening frame.
Drexel's offense couldn't find a rhythm in the second half. The Dragons were held to just seven field goals the entire half and missed all nine of their 3-point attempts. On the other end, the Tribe added six more treys and finished the game with 13, much to the delight of the more than 5,000 people in attendance. They came into the game leading the CAA in 3-pointers made per game.
Yame Butler added 14 points, while Jason Drake chipped in with 11 points and five assists. The Dragons committed just 10 turnovers, but were outrebounded, 36-29, by the Tribe. William & Mary had 12 of those rebounds on the offensive end.
The Tribe was lee by Matteus Case who scored 19 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Gabe Dorsey drained five 3-pointers, a few of them from NBA range, on his way to 17 points.
Drexel will play its final regular season road game of the 2024-25 season on Thursday night. The Dragons will visit Delaware for the last time as conference opponents. The two teams tip-off at 6:30 p.m. in the Carpenter Center.
