Dragons Win in Newark, 78-74, Sweep the Season Series With Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - Five Dragons scored in double figures as Drexel defeated Delaware, 78-74, in the team's final regular season meeting as CAA opponents. The Dragons swept the season series for the third straight year and have now won six in a row against their long-time rivals.
Drexel controlled the majority of the game, but Delaware (12-16, 5-10) opened the second half with an 11-4 run to take a 49-48 on a pair of John Camden free throws. Shane Blakeney drained a 3-pointer on the next possession before Niels Lane hit a jumper to tie it. The Dragons then went on a 7-0 run and led the rest of the contest.
Down the stretch, each team struggled to score, but the Dragons were able to hit their free throws as they evened their record at 14-14. Jason Drake was 4-for-4 from the line in the final minute as Drexel took an 86-85 overall lead in the series. Drake led the team with 14 points and six assists. He was 8-for-8 from the line. Victor Panov, Shane Blakeney and Kobe MaGee each scored 13 points. Panov was extremely effective, making five of his six shots.
The Dragons came out on fire and shot 72 percent from the field in the first half. They sank 11 of their first 12 shots and built a 12-point lead just three minutes into the game. The Blue Hens rallied quickly and took advantage of a Drexel technical foul on Jason Drake. Delaware made two free throws and turned it into a five-point possession when John Camden drained a 3-pointer, making it 28-26. The Dragons finished the half strong as Victor Panov scored six of his 11 first half points in the final six minutes on two 3-point plays. Delaware scored late on a Camden put back, but the Dragons quickly got the ball on the wing to Shane Blakeney. He found Kevon Vanderhorst, who beat the defense back and slammed home a dunk, giving Drexel a 44-35 lead at the break.
Drexel finished the night shooting 59 percent from the field and made 14 of its 15 free throws. The Drexel defense held Delaware to just 8-for-32 from behind the arc. Lane had a big night for the Hens with 18 points and missed just one of his nine shots. Camden finished with 15, while Izaiah Pasha scored 14 and handed out nine assists.
