PHILADELPHIA - Kobe MaGee scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half as Drexel raced out to an early lead and defeated the College of Charleston, 64-55. The Dragons opened up a 19-point lead early in the second half as they beat the Cougars for the third straight time at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Cougars (21-8, 11-5 CAA) scored the first five points of the game, but Drexel (15-14, 7-9 CAA) answered with a 16-0 run. Drexel made four 3-pointers in that stretch and had seven in the first half. The defense played well early and held Charleston without a point for a stretch of almost eight and a half minutes. Despite that stretch, Charleston came back and cut the lead to one with 4:17 to play in the opening half. The Dragons answered by scoring the next 10 points and held a 30-21 lead at the break.
Drexel came out strong in the second half and made sure the Cougars would not be able to get back in the game. DU opened on a 12-2 run and Charleston wasn't able to cut the lead to single digits until the final minute.
Magee was one of three Dragons in double figures. He drained four 3-pointers and had two steals. Jason Drake had 12 points, a team-high six rebounds and three assists. Cole Hargrove added 11 points as the Dragons won their second straight game.
Ante Brzovic, the CAA Preseason Player of the Year, led Charleston with 16 points and six rebounds. Deywilk Tavarez had 11 points for the Cougars, who had won three of their last four games and were in third place in the CAA.
Drexel's defense held Charleston to 37 percent shooting in the game. The Cougars made just nine of their 32 shots (.281) in the first half. Drexel ended the night 43 percent from the floor and drained nine 3-pointers.
The Dragons will finish the season with two more home games at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Hampton comes to Philadelphia on Thursday and the regular season ends on March 1 when the Dragons host Monmouth.
