PHILADELPHIA – Yame Butler sank a pair of free throws with just 23 seconds remaining in the game and Drexel held on for a narrow 53-52 win against Hampton at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Drexel (16-14, 8-9 CAA) trailed by three with 1:21 to play after a Noah Farrakhan jumper made it 52-49. The Dragons answered with a pair of Jason Drake free throws, cutting the lead to one. On the ensuing possession, Farrakhan missed a 3-pointer and Kobe MaGee came up with the rebound. Drexel called timeout, and after the break, Butler was fouled by George Beale, Jr., and calmly made two free throws. The Dragons came up with another stop, this time when Farrakhan's pass in the paint went out of bounds. Drake was fouled, but missed the one-and-one with 4.5 seconds to go. Hampton (16-14, 8-9) called timeout and set up the final play with just four ticks left on the clock. The Pirates' long 3-point attempt missed and the Dragons came away with their third straight win.
Drexel shot the ball very well in the early portion of the contest, making seven of their first 10 shots. The Dragons then opened up a 10-point lead on a pair of Butler free throws with 5:24 remaining in the half. That lead was keyed by the defense, which held the Pirates without a field goal for a span of 7:11. However, Drexel's offense wasn't able to take advantage of the Pirate drought. Hampton hung around and eventually cut the lead to three at the break when Etienne Strothers drained a shot from three quarter court, stunning the crowd and making it a 30-27 game.
Cole Hargrove had a nice night for the Dragons, scoring 12 points, grabbing nine boards and blocking three shots. He was 5-for-5 from the floor. Drake led the Dragons with 15 points.
The Dragons' defense played well once again, holding the Pirates to just 34 percent shooting in the game. Drexel held Hampton to just 3-for-15 from deep after the Pirates made 27 treys over their last two games. Drexel shot 44 percent in the game but made a season low one 3-pointer on nine attempts.
Farrakhan finished with a game-high 18 points on 9-for-19 shooting. He was the only Hampton player with more than six points.
The Dragons will play their final regular season game of the year on Saturday at the DAC. Drexel will host Monmouth at 2 p.m. in a game that will decide the seedings heading into the CAA Championship in Washington, D.C.
