Dragons Outlast Elon, 63-56

ELON, N.C. - The Drexel women's basketball team defeated the Elon Phoenix, 63-56, for their fourth consecutive win on Sunday afternoon in North Carolina. The Dragons used double-digit performances by three players to improve to 15-9 overall and 11-3 in the conference, while Elon fell to 13-12 overall and a 7-7 tab in CAA play. Drexel has now won nine of its last 10 and is just one game out of first place in the Coastal Athletic Association.
BY THE NUMBERS
Hodges completed her second double-double of the season and third in her career during the third quarter of the contest. The graduate student finished the game with 20 points, 12 rebounds and was 7-for-8 from the floor. Hodges narrowly missed a triple-double with eight assists in the win. Her 12 rebound performance ties a career-high, which she set on Friday against Campbell.
Deja Evans had another solid game for DU. She finished the contest with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. It was the second straight 15-point performance for the sophomore.
Cara McCormack scored 11 points in her fourth straight double-digit game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons and Phoenix battled to a 17-12 first quarter, in favor of the Dragons. Drexel managed to draw seven fouls and got to the charity strip 11 times, converting on nine attempts. Hodges paced the Dragons in the first frame with six points and five rebounds. Amaris Baker scored five points, while McCormack was successful on her three-pointer and free throw to rally four points.
Both Drexel and Elon shot 7-for-12 in the second quarter, but Elon used three treys to trim the Drexel lead to just two points, outscoring Drexel, 17-14 in the frame. Hodges and Evans both added six points to their stat sheets. Hodges ended the first half with 12 points and six rebounds. The score after the first half was 31-29 in favor of DU. Drexel played with the lead for over 15 minutes in the first half.
Elon took its first lead since the first half with 2:59 left in the third quarter. However, Drexel regained the lead and had a 45-41 lead with less than a second left in the quarter. A Drexel foul gave Elon two tries at the free throw line. The Phoenix were successful on both attempts, and ended the quarter trailing by two.
Drexel began the third frame on a 6-2 run that extended its lead to eight points, causing Elon to call an early timeout. The Phoenix pulled within three with less than a minute to play, but a Grace O'Neill three from deep beat the shot clock to give Drexel a six-point lead with 30 seconds remaining. An empty offensive possession led Drexel to an and-one foul on the other end to take a commanding nine-point lead.

The Dragons return home on Friday, Feb. 28 to play their final two home games of the regular season. Drexel hosts Monmouth on Friday at 6 p.m. and Campbell will visit the DAC on Sunday at 1 p.m.
