PHILADELPHIA - Drexel made multiple comebacks and hit 3-pointers to force both overtime periods, but UNCW's Greedy Williams scored with less than a second to play to give the Seahawks an 81-79 double overtime victory at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Saturday. UNCW won for the eighth straight time to improve to 20-5 (10-2 CAA). Drexel fell to 13-12 and 5-7 in conference play.
The Dragons trailed by six with 35 seconds left in the second overtime, but managed to tie the game as they looked to force a third overtime. Kobe MaGee hit a 3-pointer with 22 seconds left and after UNCW's Sean Moore missed two free throws, MaGee got open on the left wing and evened the score at 79-79 with four seconds to play. UNCW called timeout and then Williams got the inbounds pass and raced the length of the court, where he scored on a lay-up as the clock expired.
In the first overtime, the Dragons found themselves in a five-point hold with just 30 seconds to go. Jason Drake cut the deficit to three on a driving lay-up and then Drexel fouled. Moore went to the line, where he missed both, giving Drexel a chance to tie. Drake found himself wide open at the top of the key with three seconds to play, and he drained a trey, making it 69-69 and forcing the first extra stanza.
UNCW led for the majority of the game, although Drexel was within reach the entire day. The Seahawks used a 6-0 run to take their biggest lead at 57-48 with 7:36 to play. The Dragons chipped away but still trailed by four with two minutes to play in regulation. Magee scored in the lane cutting it to two with 1:44 remaining. UNCW went inside to Khamari McGriff on the next possession, but he was rejected by Cole Hargrove. On the other end, Shane Blakeney backed down his defender and tied the score on a short jump hook in the land. The Dragons had two chances to win it after a UNCW turnover. With just 10 seconds left, Blakeney found Victor Panov at the top of the key. The junior had a 3-pointer just miss and Yame Butler came up with the offensive board. His short jumper also just missed and the Seahawks got the rebound and called time. They were unable to get a good shot, and the teams went to overtime.
Drake led the Dragons with 21 points, his second straight game with more than 20. He also sank three 3-pointers and had five assists. Butler added 17 points, while MaGee had his second double-double in the last three games with 16 points and 10 rebounds. He was 4-for-6 from deep. Blakeney was also in double figures with 13 points and had a team-high three steals.
UNCW's Moore had 23 points and 15 rebounds. McGriff was 8-for-12 shooting and finished with 16 points. Both teams struggled from the line. Drexel was just 7-for-12, while the Seahawks shot 48 percent from the stripe (12-for-25).
Drexel begins its final road stretch of the regular season next week. The Dragons will go to Hampton, William & Mary and Delaware before returning home for their final three games.
