PHILADELPHIA – Associate Professor Joe Steinhardt has been named Drexel's Faculty Athletic Representative. Steinhardt teaches in the school's Music Industry Program.
The Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR), who is appointed by the President, serves as a liaison between the University and Athletics. It is the responsibility of the FAR to help ensure academic integrity, support institutional control and enhance the academic experience. The FAR also serves as a liaison with faculty members, assists with interpreting institutional academic policies and supports health & well-being matters of student-athletes.
Steinhardt has been a professor at Drexel since the 2019-20 academic year. He came to University City after teaching at Michigan State University from 2016 until 2019. Steinhardt was also a postdoctoral research associate in the Cornell University Department of Communications.
"We are thrilled to announce that Joe Steinhardt has been appointed as Drexel's Faculty Athletic Representative," Drexel Vice President, Director of Athletics & Recreation Maisha Kelly said. "Joe has exhibited a commitment to the overall well-being of our Student Athletes. We look forward to him assisting in fostering relationships on campus to ensure our students get the guidance, support and resources that enable them to be successful in the classroom and have a well-rounded experience."
In addition to his teaching duties, Steinhardt is the owner of Don Giovanni Records, a label that he co-founded in 2003. The label's focus has since broadened to promote a wide array of untraditional artists from underrepresented groups into some of the best-selling and most celebrated artists of their era including Mitski, Waxahatchee, Kari Faux, Screaming Females, Moor Mother, Irrversible Entanglements, and others who released career-defining works on the label.
"I am deeply honored and grateful to represent Drexel as the Faculty Athletic Representative," said Steinhardt. "I look forward to working with our compliance and academic support staff to contribute to the continued success of our student-athletes and enhancing the collaboration between academics and athletics."
Don Giovanni Records remains committed to furthering alternative culture and independent values, providing resources for artists who prefer to work outside of the mainstream music industry.
In 2016, Steinhardt founded and curated the New Alternative Music Festival, a two-day concert held at New Jersey's Asbury Park Convention Hall.
Steinhardt has had numerous works published during his career. Steinhardt is most known for his publications about the music industry, but he also has written about other subjects including public health communication, among others. He recently released a graphic novel, Merriment, with Marissa Paternoster.
Steinhardt studied communication at Boston University, where he graduated in 2006. He went on to earn both a master's degree as well as a Ph.D. in communication at Cornell.
