Dragons Upended by Charleston, 74-64

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Drexel women's basketball team was defeated 74-64 to the College of Charleston Cougars on Friday night in Charleston, S.C. The Dragons fell to 1-3 in conference play, while Charleston improved to 5-0.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker led the Dragons in scoring with 17 points. The graduate student went 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Laine McGurk tallied 15 points after shooting 6-for-13 and cashing in on two treys.
Deja Evans finished the game with a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. It is her third double-double this season and eighth in her career.
With three blocks in tonight's game, Evans pushed her Drexel total to 87, taking third place in the program's all-time blocks list.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Charleston had a two-point lead entering the first media timeout of the game, 7-5. McGurk paced the Dragons in scoring the first quarter, with five points, but Charleston was able to maintain a two-point lead heading into the second quarter, 13-11.
Charleston launched a 21-point scoring outburst in the second quarter to force Drexel to use its first timeout of the game. After the timeout with 2:22 remaining in the quarter, Drexel finished the quarter on a 7-2 run to dwindle Charleston's lead to nine. At the half, McGurk led the Dragons in scoring with 13.
The Cougars outscored the Dragons 18-15 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 12 with 10 minutes to play. The Dragons only scored three field goals in the third frame but were able to get to the charity line nine times. The Dragons made all nine attempts.
Both teams had an offensive outburst in the fourth quarter with Drexel owning the frame, 22-20. Evans and Baker each contributed six points to help Drexel shoot a 64 percent clip in the fourth frame.
