Dragons Defeat Northeastern, 83-78

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team defeated the Northeastern Huskies Saturday, 83-78, at home. Josh Reed led the team with a career-high 22 points.
BY THE NUMBERS
Reed shot 75% from the field along with rebounding the ball twice, handing out two assists and stealing the ball once. 20 of his 22 points came in the second half.
Shane Blakeny had 14 points to go with four rebounds, four assists and a steal. He also tied his career high with three blocks.
Garfield Turner had 12 points on the night. He also pulled in five rebounds while having an assist and a block.
Drexel's bench outscored Northeastern's 43-17 and outblocked the Huskies 5-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game began closely, with points from Kevon Vanderhorst and Martin de Laporterie giving Drexel a 5-4 lead with 16:06 remaining. A layup from Dillon Tingler at 12:36 started a 12-0 Dragon run.
The Huskies responded with a 7-0 run but a Vanderhorst layup extended the lead to six with 4:46 left. Northeastern cut the lead to two before a Turner jump shot at 1:16 made it 30-26. The half ended with a Victor Panov three to give Drexel a 33-28 lead.
Drexel shot 48.3% from the field in the first half and outrebounded Northeastern 17-15.
The second half started with a 6-4 Huskie run before a three and dunk from Vanderhorst made it an eight-point lead at 14:23.
Reed started a 9-2 Dragon run with a jump shot at 12:14. A Blakeney three and Tingler layup pushed the lead to 16 at 8:08. The Huskies responded with an 11-4 run before a jump shot from Reed made it 62-51 at 4:35. Northeastern made a layup before a Reed and-one pushed the lead to 12 with 3:45 remaining.
Northeastern chipped away at the lead but free throws from Panov, Blakeney and Reed gave Drexel a 79-67 lead with 49 seconds left. Back-to-back Huskie threes made it a six-point game before Reed sank two free throws to make it an eight-point game with 18 seconds to go. The Huskies scored five points, but Blakeney ended the game with two free throws.
