Dragons Win Close, 58-51 Game Against Hampton Pirates

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's basketball team continued its three-game homestand with a physical, 58-51, win against the Hampton Pirates Thursday evening. Josh Reed led the team with 14 points. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
Reed finished the night with four rebounds and a steal.
Victor Panov had 11 points along with four rebounds, a career-high four steals and an assist.
Shane Blakeney also had 11 points along with four rebounds, two assists and a block.
Kevon Vanderhorst and Villiam Garcia Adsten both had strong nights defensively, finishing with a plus-minus point differential of 13 and 12, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hampton scored first, a minute into the game, before a Martin De Laporterie layup started an 8-2 Drexel run early.
Hampton responded with an 8-2 run of their own before baskets by Blakeney and Eli Beard put the Dragons in front 19-14 with 5:58 remaining.
The Pirates fought back, with another 8-2 run, but Panov's jump shot gave Drexel a 24-22 lead with 0:49 seconds left. Hampton scored before the end of the half to make it a 25-24 game at halftime.
Drexel's defense held the Pirates to 32.2% shooting in the first half, including only one three.
The Dragons started the second half strong. After Hampton scored in the opening minute, a Blakeney jumpshot kicked off a 19-4 run for Drexel. During the run, Drexel forced three turnovers and 12 missed shots.
A fast break layup from Reed made the score 43-31 with 9:16 remaining. Hampton cut the lead down to eight before Reed scored three times to make it a 49-35 lead with 6:30 to go. The Pirates fought back, responding with a 14-2 run to cut Drexel's lead down to two with 2:00 on the clock. In the final minute, Drexel sealed the win with free throws from Panov, Blakeney, Vanderhorst and Beard.
On defense, the Dragons outrebounded the Pirates 26-23. Drexel's bench outscored Hampton's 21-15.
