Buzzer Beater Lifts Dragons Over North Carolina A&T, 61-60

PHILADELPHIA – A last-second buzzer beater from Kevon Vanderhosrt gave the Drexel men's basketball team a 61-60 win over the North Carolina A&T Aggies on Saturday to conclude its three game homestand. Shane Blakeney led the team with 19 points. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
Blakeney finished the night by tying a career high of nine rebounds along with two assists.
Eli Beard had 12 points while pulling in two rebounds and three assists.
Vanderhorst had five assists and a steal.
The Dragons outrebounded the Aggies 36-31 while making the most of second-chance opportunities, outscoring NC A&T 12-6 in second-chance points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Similar to other CAA games for the Dragons this season, the first half was low scoring, back and forth, before a Drexel run put them up at the break. Early Baskets from Blakeney, Martin de Laporterie and Beard gave Drexel a 7-3 lead with 15:24 remaining.
The Aggies responded with a 13-3 run to make it 11-10 before back-to-back jump shots from Garfield Turner kicked off a 12-4 Dragon run with 5:00 to go. The two teams traded baskets before a Victor Panov three with 11 seconds left gave Drexel a 29-21 lead at the half.
The Dragon's defense held the North Carolina A&T to 25.9% shooting in the opening frame, with the Aggies shooting 8.3% from three.
The second half started with threes from Blakeney, Vanderhorst and Beard to make it 38-25 with 16:24 remaining.
Back-to-back-to-back threes from Beard and Blakeney helped extend the lead to 17 at 13:23 before the Aggies went on a 20-4 run, cutting the lead down to one at 3:41. Drexel fought back, with back-to-back baskets by Turner making it 57-52 with 2:12 remaining.
An Aggie and-one cut the lead back down to two but Blakeney put the Dragons up four with 1:02 left. North Carolina made two free throws before sinking a three to take a 60-59 lead with 0:04 on the clock before a last second layup from Vanderhorst gave Drexel the win.
The win puts Drexel at 12-11 and 6-4 in CAA play.

The Dragons travel down to Buies Creek, North Carolina, to face the Campbell Camels on February 5 in the first of two road games to begin February.
