HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel and Leigh went back and forth in the first half as both teams took time to become used to the weather conditions. Both teams headed into the half tied 0-0. The Dragons would break that tie in the second half as Drexel would earn a penalty corner. Val Van Hellemont would insert the corner before finding the ball on a rebound; the senior fired the ball into the back of the cage to put the Dragons up 1-0. Drexel earned another corner shortly after scoring, where Cato Nackaerts received the corner and shot towards the net and was deflected by Fleur Hamers past the keeper into the goal.
Drexel would continue their offensive output in the fourth quarter as Sadie Schultz would receive a pass from the defense and turn towards goal with a two-on-one opportunity. After dribbling towards goal, Schultz passed to an open Ryan Hickey, who would put the Dragons up by 3. Hamers would score her second goal of the game after Drexel earned a penalty stroke. The sophomore would fire the ball into the top left corner, giving Drexel a 4-0 lead. The Dragons would score their fifth and final goal. Van Hellemont would get the ball at the top of the circle, make a move, and pass the ball to Schultz, who took a touch before backhanding the ball, firing a shot into the net.
UP NEXT
The Dragons will resume conference play on Friday, taking on CAA opponent Towson on the road. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start time on October 16h.
