ELON, N.C. – The Drexel men's basketball team concluded its two-game road trip with an 82-77 win over the Elon Phoenix on Saturday. Eli Beard led the team with 16 points. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Worker's Local 98 is once again the presenting sponsor of Drexel Men's Basketball.
BY THE NUMBERS
Beard shot 85.7% on the afternoon and had three assists.
Shane Blakeney and Victor Panov both had 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Garfield Turner tied a career-high in points (14) and set a career-high in rebounds (12)
Drexel won the turnover battle 10-6 and held Elon to 40.7% shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Early baskets from Beard and Martin de Laporterie helped set the tone early. The Phoenix tied things up before a Victor Panov three made it 7-4 Drexel with 17:13 to go. A Beard three at 13:24 capped of a 10-2 Dragon run to extend the lead to 11.
Elon cut the lead to one with an 8-0 run before free throws from Garfield Turner at 11:17 started a 10-3 Dragon run. The Phoenix closed the gap, cutting the lead down to three with 4:34 on the clock but a pair of free throws from Kevon Vanderhorst started another 10-3 run for Drexel. The half ended with a physical layup from Panov.
Elon started the second half strong, with a 9-5 run to start the half, but a layup from Turner made it 53-44 Drexel with 16:56 left. The Phoenix went on a 15-8 run to make it a four-point game with 9:27 to play. A three from Blakeney started a 7-2 run to put the Dragons up nine with 6:44 to go in the game.
Elon cut the lead to five but free throws from Vanderhorst and Villiam Garcia Adsten put the game out of reach as the Dragons won 82-77.
Drexel's bench outscored Elon 26-3 and capitalized on opportunities, outscoring the Phoenix 17-10 on points off opponent turnovers.
