Ashley Howard joined the Drexel staff in August of 2008. He is working under Bruiser Flint, his former coach, for the second time. Howard will work primarily with Drexel’s guards and will also be on the road recruiting for the Dragons.
The Dragons have had stellar play from their backcourt over the last few years under Howard’s tutelage. Chris Fouch was named to the CAA’s Second Team in 2011, while freshman point guard Frantz Massenat was named to the league’s All-Rookie team.
The former Drexel guard returned to University City after serving as an assistant coach at La Salle for four seasons under John Giannini. The Explorers won eight games in Atlantic 10-play last season, including four in a row in conference play in February, and finished with 15 wins. Howard helped recruit Jerrell Williams and Rodney Green, both of whom were selected to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. Green was also an All-Big 5 pick.
During the summer of 2006, Howard was an assistant coach of the Jamaican National team and accompanied the squad on its Olympic qualifying bid in Kingston. The team earned a gold medal in the qualifying tourney. Howard also served as the Co-Director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp before arriving at La Salle.
Howard had his collegiate career cut short when he was diagnosed with a heart condition after his sophomore season at Drexel. In what would turn out to be his last season, Howard averaged 8.9 points and a team-high 4.9 assists per game. He also tied for the team lead with 50 three-pointers and shot .382 from behind the arc. In America East play, Howard made just under 46 percent of his long-range attempts. He remained at Drexel as a student assistant coach under Flint during the 2002-03 season.
Howard graduated with a communications degree from Drexel in 2004. He attended Monsignor Bonner High School, where he was named a Street and Smith honorable mention high school All-American. Howard was also a two-time All-Catholic League selection and was a Second Team All-City selection by the Philadelphia Daily News.
Howard is single and lives in Philadelphia. He is the son of Maurice Howard and Diane Coleman. His father played his college ball at the University of Maryland and was a second round pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1976 and also played for the New Orleans Jazz.
