Joe Palmer joined Drexel coaching staff in 2006 and leads the freshmen men's crew team. He came to Drexel with experience coaching in some of the most successful Dad Vail rowing programs in the nation. Before Drexel, Palmer served as the novice women's coach at Purdue University, where he led the novice women's eight to gold and the novice four to silver at the 2004 Dad Vail Regatta. Palmer began coaching at his alma mater, Marietta College, a very successful Dad Vail program. Palmer assisted John Bancheri, an accomplished Dad Vail coach.
In 2011-12, he guided the freshmen eight to a silver medal finish at the 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta for the third straight year. The Dragons had a strong season including five top times including the Murphy Cup, Kerr Cup and Bergen Cup. The freshmen eight also took second at the Knecht Cup. After Drexel Crew received its first-ever team bid to the 2012 IRA National Championships, Palmer led the freshmen eight to fifth place in the third level finals and 15th overall. He also joined Savell at the prestigious 2012 Henley Royal Regatta along with Drexel’s first-ever varsity eight boat.
In 2010-11, Palmer led the freshmen eight to first place finishes at the Bill Braxton Regatta, the La Salle/ Saint Joseph's tri-meet, Villanova Duel, the Knecht Cup, the Kerr Cup and the Bergen Cup. The freshmen eight took second place at Murphy Cup as well as the 2011 Dad Vail Regatta. The silver medal from the Dad Vails and the gold medal from Knecht Cup highlighted the season.
In the 2009-10 season, Palmer helped the freshmen eight capture first place victories at the Murphy Cup, Kerr Cup, Lehigh Duel, Braxton Regatta, and the Frostbite Regatta. His greatest achievement on the season was leading the freshmen eight to a second place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta. The freshmen eight also recorded two more second place finishes at the Knecht Cup and Bergen Cup.
In the 2008-09 season, Palmer helped the novice eight to a grand finals berth at the Dad Vail Regatta. In the previous season, Palmer was instrumental in the development and recruiting of the freshman class that included a novice four boat that took sixth at the IRA Championship.
In the 2006-07 season, Palmer served as the interim men’s head coach and led the varsity eight to victories at the Bill Braxton Regatta and the Lehigh/Delaware tri-meet. The highlight of the season was Drexel's victory at the Bergen Cup, where they toppled city rival Saint Joseph's. The junior varsity also had a solid season with wins at the Bill Braxton Regatta, Philadelphia Frostbite, the Lehigh/Delaware tri-meet and the Lehigh dual meet.
Prior to arriving at Drexel, Palmer produced nationally competitive varsity men's four and freshman eight crews at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, where he was the men's head coach.
At Marietta, Palmer was a three-year varsity letterwinner on the Pioneers' varsity heavyweight team. He won two gold medals and a bronze in four Dad Vail Regattas. During his senior year, Marietta captured the men's team championship at the 2002 Dad Vail Regatta, its first since 1973. He also helped the varsity four to a sixth-place finish at the IRA Championship. Palmer graduated from Marietta in 2002 with a bacehlor's degree in advertising and public relations.
Palmer is a 1998 graduate of Atlantic City High School where he was a three-time varsity letterwinner. As a freshman, Palmer rowed at Holy Spirit High School for current Drexel Head Coach Paul Savell. Palmer is a member of the Margate City Beach Patrol and currently resides in Ventnor, N.J.
