Dylan Cunningham was named assistant coach to Drexel University Men’s and Women’s Squash in August of 2019. No stranger to University City, Cunningham spent the previous two seasons as an assistant at Penn.
In 2021-22, the women's team enjoyed a breakout season, advancing to the national championship match. The victories against Princeton and Trinity in the national quarterfinals and semifinals were the first ever for the program against those schools in team history and highlighted a program best 16-5 record. Alina Bushma and Karina Tyma earned All-America honors, seven members of the team were named All-Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference and five were selected as MASC All-Academic.
On the men's side, Drexel advanced to the Potter Cup for the third time and earned a seventh place finish, beating Virginia on the final day of competition. Following a 12-8 regular season that included a win against No. 7 Cornell, three Dragons earned All-America honors witrh five garnering All-MASC accolades.
Cunningham’s first season with the Dragons was the finest in program history. The women’s team won a team-best 12 matches in 2019-20, returned to the Howe Cup and finished seventh nationally for a second-consecutive season. A strong start, including their first win over a top-four opponent, propelled the Dragons to No. 5 in the College Squash Association December rankings, the highest spot they had ever occupied. He helped guide Karina Tyma to first team all-America honors, the first time a member of the women’s squash team had accomplished that feat, and Alina Bushma garnered second team all-American status.
The men’s team won 10 matches in 2019-20 and ranked as high as No. 5 in the nation in December. The Dragons earned their first-ever win over Rochester and, despite a pair of significant injuries, returned to the Potter Cup for the second time in program history. Drexel finished the campaign ranked eighth in the country. Individually, the men’s team sent six participants to the CSA Individual Championships, and both Matias Knudsen and Lucas Rousselet were recognized as second team all-Americans.
Cunningham joined the Quakers in 2017 as a volunteer coach before being elevated to a full-time role the following season. He helped guide the Penn men’s program to 14 victories in 2018-19, the most in team history, and its best finish in the CSA Team National Championships, placing third in the Potter Cup.
Cunningham’s coaching career began in his native Ohio, where he ran private lessons and clinics at the Cleveland Racquet Club. He then went on to coach elite-level juniors at the Germantown Cricket Club.
He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Franklin & Marshall in 2015, completing his degree in government in just three years. The Diplomats finished in the top-eight nationally in Cunningham’s three seasons on the men’s squash team, including a top-four finish in 2014. In his final year with the program, he received the Ron Epps Men’s Squash Award as the team’s most improved player.
Cunningham enjoyed success in the professional squash ranks as well and is a three-time quarterfinalist at the U.S. National Championships. In addition, he was ranked as high as 93rd in the world rankings.
He currently resides in Philadelphia.
