Stephen Freeman (formerly Stephen Reustle) joined the Drexel swimming and diving coaching staff during the fall of 2018 and enters his third season as the head diving coach.
In the 2020-21 season, Jack Patton was named Rookie Diver of the Year at the CAA Championships.
The Dragons returned to the NCAA Diving Zone A Championships for the first time since 2013 in Freeman’s first season in charge. Anthony Musciano claimed gold at the CAA Championships in the 1-meter dive before finishing in 24th place at diving zones. Joining Musciano in Annapolis was freshman Katie Caputo, who finished 64th.
The Dragons received academic honors as well in 2018-19, with both men’s and women’s teams receiving CSCAA Scholar All-America distinctions. In addition, the men’s team received the NCAA APR public recognition award in 2019 for posting a multiyear APR in the top-10 percent of their respective sport.
Prior to this appointment, Stephen served as the head coach of area high schools and aquatic clubs since 2006. He was also the assistant coach for multiple Junior Olympic dive programs in the greater Philadelphia area, which produced many national qualifiers.
Freeman attended Drexel University from 2001-2006 where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in International Area Studies and minors in German and Corporate Communication. While at Drexel, Freeman was a valuable member of the Dragons Swim and Dive team, qualifying for finals and/or medaling in each CAA conference championship. Post-graduation Stephen obtained a Master’s Degree in Leadership from Rider University and enjoys a career in international sales management for one of the largest German multi-national corporations in the world.
A native of the Philadelphia area, Freeman has been involved in the sport of diving since age nine, is married and resides in South Philadelphia.
