Wilmington, N.C. – The Seahawks scored two goals early in the first half to set the tone of the match and eventually took down the Dragons, 4-0, in Colonial Athletic Association competition Sunday afternoon. UNCW improves to 11-4-0 and 6-2-0 in CAA play, and the Dragons drop to 4-10-1 and 1-7-0.
The Seahawks took an early lead when Kelly Renkin put the ball into the top left corner of the goal at the 3:13 mark from 25 yards out. Less than four minutes later Ashley Church put the Seahawks up 2-0 when she found the back of the net from 20 yards away.
Senior Liz Chriss scored her second goal of the season early in the second half off a cross from freshman Erica Rodgers. The final goal of the match was scored at the 50:15 mark when Church passed to Whitney Andringa in the middle of the goal box who got though Drexel's defense and put UNCW up, 4-0.
The Dragons played well but could not convert. Senior #Sherriann Steadman#, junior #Aleka Yiantsos# and freshman #Caley Burke# led the squad taking shots for the Dragons, but UNCW goalkeepers Jamie Balzarini, Christine York and Emily Pratt combined to record the shutout. Pratt recorded a save off Burke's shot. Sophomore #Erica Lippitt# recorded three saves in the first half and fellow sophomore, #Kaitlin Bond#, finished with two saves after the break.
UNCW took 17 shots in the game and held the Dragons to three.
The Dragons return to Vidas Field on Friday, October 20, when they host Hofstra at 4:00.
