Philadelphia, Pa. – The Pride waited patiently before striking in the 79th minute and held of a number of Drexel scoring attempts to take the victory, 1-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association contest. Hofstra improves to 8-8-1 on the season and 4-5 in the CAA and the Dragons fall to 4-11-1, and 1-8 in CAA play.
The Dragons dominated the 2005 CAA champions in the first half by maintaining possession for the majority of the period. The Dragons took 10 shots in the first half and held the Pride to only three. Drexel almost opened the scoring multiple times in the first half. The closest opportunity came when a penalty was called on Hofstra's Sue Weber and Drexel freshman #Heatherrae Steadman# passed the ball to #Christine Murta# who headed it just high of the net.
Both teams returned in the second half just as hungry and made the fight to score just as aggressive. But it was Hofstra freshman Erika Fuertes that took a pass from junior Larkin Hargraves to score the game-winning goal. The Dragons persevered taking several shots on goal, but came up short. Freshman #Carly Snyder# had two close calls late in the game, but the shots could not phase Hofstra goalkeeper Krysten Farriella. Farriella finished with seven saves to record the shutout and #Kaitlin Bond# had six saves in the losing effort for Drexel.
Murta led the Dragon offense by firing five shots while freshmen Snyder and Steadman each took four. Senior #Erin Williams# and junior #Aleka Yiantsos# each had three shots for the Dragons. Drexel led Hofstra in shots, 19-12, and corner kicks, 6-3.
The Dragons will next be in action when they travel to Northeastern on Sunday for a 1 p.m contest. Drexel returns to Vidas Field on Friday, October 27, when they host Delaware on the Dragons' senior night. The match will commence at 7 p.m.
