
Jon Oplinger Defeated in Day Two at the NCAA Wrestling Championships

Oklahoma City, Okla.- Jon Oplinger defeated Chris Pogue of Navy, 13-4, to advance in the consolation bracket of the NCAA Championships being held in Oklahoma City. Drexel's 197-pound sophomore then lost 12-5 to Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan. Michalak was the number one seed, but was upset by Chris Weidman of Hofstra in the second round of the championship bracket.
Oplinger led early in the match against Michalak, but the number-one seed battled back to defeat Drexel's 197-pounder. Against Chris Pogue of Navy, Oplinger used a series of double-leg takedowns to take an 8-2 lead into the third period. He would take the Midshipman down a couple more times in the third round to earn the 13-4 major decision victory. With the win Oplinger ran his record to 24-10 on the season.
Drexel's other three wrestlers all lost their consolation bouts on Thursday. Steve Mytych lost to Lehigh's Matt Fisk, 1-0. It was their second meeting of the season; both ended in a 1-0 decision in Fisk's favor. Chris Renninger lost a 7-2 decision to Trevor Chinn of Lehigh. Ryan Hluschak lost his third meeting of the season with Hofstra's James Strouse when dropped an 11-5 decision at 157 pounds.
