West Point, N.Y. — Drexel women's soccer opened its season with a 2-0 loss to the Black Knights of Army in the first meeting between the two schools. With the loss, the Dragons start their season at 0-1.

Army wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as senior Ashley Emerson tallied the first goal of the game on the team's second shot just nine minutes into the first half. Emerson took a pass from freshman Christine O'Leary and put the ball in the left corner of the net. The Dragons played an even match and created chances to score, but could not finish. The two teams traded possessions for the remainder of the first half, with Drexel making four shots on goal.

In the second half, Army's Ronee Farrell scored an insurance goal off a pass from Emerson. Farrell put the ball into the left corner of the net on a header that was just beyond Drexel goalkeeper Erica Lippitt's reach.

Drexel junior Aleka Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) attempted a comeback in the final seconds of the contest when she got a hold of a loose ball. Yiantsos fired but was unable to connect as Army's goalkeeper Rebecca Garcia dove to make the save. Yiantsos led the Dragons with five shots and senior Sherriann Steadman (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) took four.

Lippitt made eight saves in goal for the Dragons while Army's Garcia tallied six saves in goal for the Black Knights. Drexel held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks while Army's 22 shots bested Drexel's 15.

The Dragons return to Vidas Field on Wednesday, August 30, when they take on Marist at 7 p.m.
