Philadelphia, Pa. — Aleka Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) scored twice for Drexel, including a goal off a penalty kick in the second overtime period to edge Long Island University, 2-1, and give the Dragons their second win of the season. With the victory, Drexel improves to 2-3 while LIU drops to 2-5.
The Dragons and Blackbirds kept quiet in the first half of the match, waiting until the 76th minute to open the scoring. It was Long Island freshman Aly Hanson that scored first off a pass from senior Christine Gans. Yiantsos responded three and a half minutes later to even the score, 1-1, with 10 minutes remaining in the second half. Neither team could convert, sending the game into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Drexel was awarded a penalty kick when a handball was called on LIU in the penalty box. Yiantsos drove the ball directly into the bottom left corner of the net to notch the game-winning golden goal at the 105:09 mark.
Erin Williams (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen), Christine Murta (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) and Lauren Steins (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) contributed to the Dragon defense, allowing the Blackbirds to take only four shots in overtime. The Blackbirds outshot the Dragons 19-10 in the contest.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) recorded six saves for the Dragons, including two key saves in overtime. Stephanie Kansky finished with five saves for LIU.
Drexel returns to Vidas Field on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they take on Rider at 12 p.m.
