Philadelphia, Pa. — Drexel recorded its first win of the 2006 season with a 4-0 win over Temple Sunday evening at Vidas Field. Junior Aleka Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) tallied a goal and two assists while senior Sherriann Steadman (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) finished with a goal and assist to set the pace for the Dragons.
The Dragons got their first two goals from freshmen Heatherrae Steadman (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) and Jaclyn Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa./Central). Steadman, who took a pass from Yiantsos, put it past Temple goalkeeper Tiffany Kasunich 17 minutes into the match to get the Dragons on the board. Drexel's second goal came three and a half minutes later when Barrett booted a 25-yarder that floated straight into the corner of the net.
Sherriann Steadman and Yiantsos picked up the pace before the break, and each scored a goal and tallied an assist. Temple kept the Dragons in check during the second half and created opportunities to score, but could not convert. The Owls had opportunities to score with eight corner kicks, but could not break into goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond's (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) territory. Bond made several key saves in the second half, including a diving save off an Owl penalty kick in the final 30 seconds. Bond finished with seven saves to preserve her shutout and Temple's Kasunich recorded four saves on the night.
Team depth and excellent play across the board proved helpful in the victory. Drexel got excellent play from seniors Erin Williams (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen), Christine Murta (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West and Jenna Carson (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy). Junior Ashley Nettuno (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) and sophomore Lauren Steins (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township) kept the Owls scoreless with their contributions on defense.
The Owls outshot Drexel 19-10, with nine of those shots coming from freshman Natalie Mell. With the victory, Drexel improves to 1-3, while Temple drops to 1-4.
Drexel returns to Vidas Field on Wednesday, Sept. 13, when they take on Long Island University at 7 p.m.
