Philadelphia, Pa. — The 18th-ranked Tribe got goals from juniors Donna Mataya and Mary MacKenzie Grier and senior Lauren Bowers in their 3-0 victory over the Dragons Friday afternoon at Vidas Field. In the first game of Colonial Athletic Association play, the Dragons fall to 3-4-1 and 0-1 in the CAA, while William & Mary improves to 7-1-1 and 1-0 in the CAA.
William & Mary did not wait long to get on the scoreboard, when Mataya found an opening in Drexel's defense and put the ball in the net 9:32 into the match. Five minutes later a foul was called on Drexel and Bowers took the kick from the left sideline and put it past Drexel goalie, #Kaitlin Bond#, making it 2-0.
The Tribe increased their lead 1:38 into the second half when Dragon goalkeeper, #Erica Lippitt#, went to pick up a free ball but Grier beat her to it and tapped it in before Lippitt could return to make the save.
Sophomore #Maria Ferrato# took a shot for the Dragons, while it was #Aleka Yiantsos#' shot on goal and #Erin Williams#' shot in the final 10 seconds of the game that gave Drexel its best chance to get on the scoreboard.
Drexel's Bond finished the night with five saves in the first half, and Lippitt tallied two in the second period. For the Tribe, Mary Jo Loos replaced Meghan Walker and made one save in 7:39 minutes of action.
The Dragons return to Vidas Field on Sunday, Sept. 24, when they host Old Dominion at 3 p.m. in another Colonial Athletic Association match.
