Philadelphia, Pa. - Creighton avenged its loss to the Dragons in last year's BracketBusters matchup in Omaha, Neb. with a 72-48 victory over Drexel in the return game at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. With the loss the Dragons fell to 5-3, while the Bluejays remained unbeaten at 5-0.
Creighton was in control for most of the game, but the Dragons made a mini-run to cut the lead to 48-36 with 7:19 remaining. Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's), who was limited due to foul trouble, scored five straight points in the run, but Elegar was then called for a foul on Drexel's next possession, which fouled him out of the game. Right after the foul was called, Drexel's Randy Oveneke was given a technical foul, and Drexel coach Bruiser Flint was also assessed a technical. Creighton made all six free throws, which sealed the Dragons' fate.
The Dragons struggled handling the ball for the second straight game. They committed a season-high 29 turnovers in the game, including 18 in the first half. The Bluejays took advantage of those turnovers and went on an 8-0 run over the final 3:47 of the first half to take a 31-18 lead at intermission.
Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) led the Dragons with 12 points. He was the only Dragon in double figures. Elegar added nine points, while Gerald Colds (New York, N.Y./Wings Academy) and Kenny Tribbett (Berlin, N.J./Chester (Pa.)) came off the bench to score seven and six points, respectively. Creighton was led by Cavel Witter who was 10-for-10 from the line and finished with 20 points. The Bluejays shot 87 percent from the line (20-23) in the game, including their final 14 attempts.
The Dragons are off until next Saturday when they visit Toledo. The Rockets are picked second in their division of the Mid-American Conference. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
