Drexel fell behind early and could not recover as Toledo defeated the Dragons, 57-44. The loss dropped the Dragons record to 5-4 on the season.
The Rockets (2-7), playing in their first home game since Nov. 13, held the Dragons without a field goal for more than seven minutes as they went on a 19-2 run to take a 26-8 lead early in the contest. Turnovers were once again a key to the game, as the Dragons committed 15 in the first half. The teams went to intermission with the Rockets ahead, 36-19.
Drexel played more inspired in the second half and cut the lead to 12 points on a few occasions, but the Dragons struggled to make shots most of the night. Entering the game, Drexel was shooting just under 39 percent from long range, but managed to make just one three-point attempts in 15 attempts against the Rockets.
Frank Elegar (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's), who picked up two fouls in the first two minutes, managed 12 points and eight rebounds. He was 6-for-7 from the floor in just 23 minutes. Elegar was the only Dragon in double figures. Randy Oveneke (Antwerpen, Belgium/Saint-Anna), Tramayne Hawthorne (Steelton, Pa./Steelton-Highspire) and Gerald Colds (New York, N.Y./St. Raymond's) each added six points. Hawthorne was 0-for-7 from behind the arc, marking the first time all year he did not make a three-pointer. Oveneke added five rebounds and had four steals.
Tyrone Kent led four Rockets in double figures with 14 points. Jerrah Young had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Toledo had 22 turnovers, as did the Dragons, but shot 46 percent in the game and made six treys. Jonathan Amos had six of the Rockets' 12 steals.
The Dragons return home to face Temple next Saturday at the Palestra. The game will be televised on ESPNU and will begin at noon.
