Norfolk, Va. - As the CAA Tennis Tournament begins this morning on the campus of Old Dominion University, Drexel's men's and women's tennis teams will have the opportunity to avenge late-season losses in their opening-round matches. The women (6-5, 1-2) will take on George Mason at 9:00 a.m. and the Drexel men (8-7, 2-2) will face Towson at the same time. Both Drexel squads suffered 4-3 losses to their tournament opponents during regular-season play. Follow www.drexeldragons.com for all the tournament results.
The Drexel men closed out their regular-season with a tight 4-3 loss at Delaware on Sunday, but will have a chance to end the season on a high note as they enter the CAA Tournament as the No. 9 seed and are set to face No. 8 George Mason on Thursday in Norfolk, Va. The Dragons (6-5, 1-2 CAA) fell 4-3 to the Patriots in their final home match of the season, April 9, but will have their shot at redemption on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in the first round of the tournament hosted by Old Dominion University.
The Patriots finished the regular season with a 10-10 overall record and a 2-3 mark in CAA matches. George Mason dropped dual matches to Delaware and James Madison entering this weekend's tournament. Three tight doubles matches that went the way of the Patriots proved to be the turning point in a match that was split 3-3 after singles play. Drexel's Nokoloz Kurdadze (first), Bryan Nguyen (third) and Skyler Davis (sixth) all won in singles play.
Drexel has advanced in each of the last two years at the CAA Tournament, with a win over George Mason last season and a victory over Hofstra in 2009. If the Dragons best the Patriots in Thursday's opening round match it will set up a show down with the top-seeded VCU Rams at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
After wrapping up their regular-season slate with a tough 4-3 loss to Delaware last Friday, the Drexel women (8-7, 2-2 CAA) will head into the CAA Tournament as an upset-minded No. 9 seed. Drexel will face No. 8 Towson (14-6, 3-2 CAA). Drexel lost to Towson in a tight 4-3 match in Maryland in regular-season play on March 29. The Tigers have won five of seven heading into the tournament with losses to Delaware and Stony Brook. The teams will square off at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 21 at the tournament, hosted by Old Dominion in Norfolk, Va.
In their regular-season meeting, the Dragons won in doubles play and took singles matches at first (Gozde Unkaya) and third (Zeynep Mafa) singles. Sonja Stosic fell in a tough three-set match at second singles, winning the second set against Encarni Lizana after dropping a first-set tiebreaker. Drexel won at first and second doubles to claim the additional team point.
The Dragons advanced from the first round in each of the last two years, with a win over George Mason last season and a win over Hofstra in 2009. Drexel would face the top seed William & Mary Tribe on Friday with a win over Towson.
