3/19/2010 1:34:16 PM
Philadelphia - Drexel softball will be back in action this weekend when the Dragons travel to play crosstown rival Temple on Sunday, March 21. Due to a series of rain-outs last weekend, Sunday's noon doubleheader will be the first competition for Drexel (3-5) in more than 20 days. The Owls played a pair of doubleheaders this week against Central Connecticut State and Delaware and enter the weekend with a 6-11 overall record.
Drexel last saw competition at the UC -Santa Barbara Gaucho Classic on Feb. 27. The Dragons split four games at the tournament with wins over UCSB and Wisconsin. Senior Ashley Botelho, who recently became the Dragons' all-time leader in home runs, is just five RBIs away from the program's all-time career record. A number of freshmen had break-out performances at UCSB in February. Hanna Parris, who is leading the team in hits, runs and stolen bases, had a game-winning bunt single against Wisconsin. In that same game, freshman Jenn Reading cracked a game-tying home run for her first career hit. Rookie pitcher Shyann Beach recorded her first collegiate victory, and pitched well in relief during the weekend tournament.
The Owls feature hitters Christina Sykora (.333 BA) and Ali Robinson (13 hits, 10 runs, 3 HR). Pitcher Kristen Marris is 5-4 on the season with a stingy 2.78 earned-run average and 49 strikeouts in 58 innings of work. Marris also leads the Owls in stolen bases. Temple has victories over Delaware, Quinnipiac (twice) Loyola -Chicago and East Tennessee State.
Opening pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. at Temple's Ambler Field. Fans can track the games on livestats by clicking here.
