Philadelphia - The Drexel women's soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 1-0 loss at Saint Joseph's University on Friday night.
Saint Joseph's scored the only goal of the contest in the 51st minute. The Hawks got the ball deep into the Dragons' zone, leading to a corner kick for the Hawks. From the corner, the ball deflected off Drexel's goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond and several players, causing it to bounce towards the middle of the goalkeeper's box. With the ball still unsettled, freshman Carly Salter booted a shot to the middle of the net to put the Hawks up 1-0.
Drexel outshot the Hawks, 6-5, but could not come up with a shot in the final 10 minutes despite controlling play most of the way. Kaitlin Bond made two saves in goal for the Dragons. Saint Joseph's keeper Megan Bastianelli made four saves for her first career shutout.
The Dragons host UMBC on Thursday night in the team's home opener at Vidas Field. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
