Philadelphia – Athena Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) had her first goal as a Dragon prove to be the game-winner as Drexel defeated Manhattan in a non-conference match, 1-0.
Yiantsos put home a feed from her sister, Aleka Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) from right in front of the net in the 54th minute. It was the first time that the sisters have combined on a goal. For Aleka, it was her 41st career point, moving her just one point away from tying the school career scoring mark.
The game went to the half scoreless, as Drexel outshot the Jaspers in the first 45 minutes, 9-7. The Dragons had their best scoring chance of the first half with just over six minutes remaining. Freshman Kim Chiarelli (Bridgeton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) had a shot in the box blocked by the Manhattan defense. Michelle McKinley (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) picked up the rebound and fired it toward the upper far left corner, but her shot hit the post. Aleka Yiantsos tried to put the rebound home, but was thwarted by Manhattan goalkeeper Alicia DeFino.
Kaitlin Bond (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) made five of her eight saves in the second half as she recorded her second straight shutout. DeFino made four save for the Jaspers. The Dragons return to action on Wednesday when they visit New Jersey Institute of Technology on Wednesday.
