Philadelphia – The Drexel field hockey team battled Lafayette evenly throughout most of the game but the difference came in a 41-second span when the Leopards were able to net a pair of goals to defeat the Dragons, 2-0. The loss dropped Drexel's record to 2-3 while Lafayette improved to 1-2.
Lafayette looked to get on the board early as Laura Fabian picked up a Drexel turnover five minutes into the game and raced in alone on goalie Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom). However, McAndrew charged and was able separate Fabian from the ball and safely cleared to keep the game scoreless.
Just three minutes into the second half Lafayette scored the game's first goal when Kelly Hilovsky crossed the ball to Anna DePetris who was alone in front of the goal. DePetris redirected the pass into the cage to give the Leopards the lead. Just 41 seconds later, Alison Schoch centered a ball to Fabian who doubled the Lafayette lead to 2-0. Drexel looked to come back but the Leopards' defense thwarted all offensive opportunities. With five minutes to go, Drexel picked up a broken Lafayette penalty corner and took it the other way. Christina Mastropaolo (Harleysville, Pa./Gwynedd Mercy) and Emily Horvat (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) were alone with the goalie, but Lafayette goalie Courtney Dixon intercepted a pass to help secure the shutout.
The teams each fired eight shots and were awarded seven penalty corners. McAndrew made six saves while Dixon stopped three for the Leopards.
Drexel begins its second three-game road trip of the season with a non-conference tilt at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
