WILMINGTON, N.C. – Freshmen Erin Pardini and Meagan Simeone scored during a five-minute span midway through the second half to break open a scoreless contest and lead UNC Wilmington to a 2-0 victory over Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Seahawks improved to 10-6-1 overall and 6-3 in CAA action as they held onto fifth place in the league standings. The Dragons fell to 6-10-1 on the season and 1-7-1 in CAA play.
UNCW held a 22-8 advantage in shots in the contest, including a 16-6 edge in the second half, but did not get on the board until the 66:32 mark, when Pardini collected a throw-in from junior Heather Froehlich on the right side and worked her way to edge of the box, where she fired a shot that found the upper right-hand corner of the net. Simeone doubled UNCW's lead 4:59 later, as a loose ball in the Drexel end created a breakaway opportunity that allowed Simeone to slide the ball under a charging Kaitlin Bond for her second goal of the campaign.
Drexel had a chance to cut into the Seahawks lead in the closing minutes, but a point-blank chance by freshman Jenna Lindsay was turned away by freshman keeper Chandler Follett.
Drexel plays at Georgia State on Sunday.
