Atlanta, Ga.- Kaitlin Bond recorded five saves in goal as Drexel shutout Georgia State on the road, 2-0. The Dragons had goals from Aleka Yiantsos and Jourdan Halasz as they won for the second time in their last three games.
The Dragons dealt a serious blow to Georgia State's playoff hopes. The Panthers (11-8, 4-6 CAA) were just one point out of the final CAA playoff spot heading into the game, but the Dragons (7-10-1, 2-7-1 CAA) played the spoiler in earning their first conference road win of the season.
Drexel got on the board with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. Kim Chiarelli fed a cross to Aleka Yiantsos, who headed the ball past Panthers' goalkeeper Heidi Blankenship. It would be the only goal of the half, but soon after intermission the Dragons found the back of the net again. This time is was freshman Jourdan Halasz who headed a ball towars the Panthers' net. It deflected off a Georgia State defender into the net and Halasz was credited with her second goal of the year.
Kaitlin Bond posted six saves in recording her third shutout of the season. It was her 17th in her career at Drexel, which extended her own school record. Blankenship had three saves. Georgia State outshot Drexel, 23-14, including a 13-4 advantage in the second half.
The Dragons conclude the 2008 season on Thursday night at Vidas Field. Senior night will begin at 7 p.m. as Drexel hosts Delaware.
