William & Mary Defeats Women's Soccer, 2-0
10/5/2008 3:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
William & Mary scored a pair of goals in the first half and went on to defeat Drexel at Vidas Field, 2-0. The Tribe improved to 8-4-1 on the season and 3-1 in the CAA. Drexel dropped to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in league play.
The Tribe opened the scoring late in the first half. Sarah Quinlan set up Diana Weigel with a nice cross. Weigel made a sliding kick right on the doorstep to give William & Mary a one-goal lead. It appeared the teams would go to the break with that score, but with less than a minute to play in the half, Weigel got on the board again. She took a long cross from Abby Lauer and went up in the air to get it. Weigel made contact with the ball and a Drexel defender, but was able to score before flipping over backwards. She was all right and the Tribe took a two-goal lead to intermission.
Drexel's best scoring chance came midway through the first half. Alicia Jiulianti took a feed from Aleka Yiantsos and broke in behind the Tribe defense. Jiulianti one-timed the shot towards the far corner, but she was thwarted by Tribe goalkeeper Meghan Walker, who dove to make the play.
The Tribe outshot Drexel, 17-6. Kaitlin Bond had five saves in a losing effort. Walker had a pair of saves in recording the shutout for William & Mary.
The Dragons will look to snap their losing streak next weekend with road games at VCU and at James Madison. The VCU game will be played on Friday night in Richmond, while Sunday's contest against James Madison is set for 1 p.m.
