Dragons Take One of Three at Lock Haven Duals

Lock Haven, Pa. - Drexel Wrestling won one of three matches at the Lock Haven Duals as the Dragons dropped East Stroudsburg, 24-15, while losing to Rutgers, 21-15, and host Lock Haven, 27-13. The victory moved Head Coach Jack Childs one win closer to the 400 career victory mark as the Division I active leader now has 397 with the Dragons. Senior 197-pounder Jon Oplinger continued his strong season as he went a perfect 3-0 on the day.
The Dragons opened the day with a tight match with Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights opened with a win by decision at 125 pounds before Frank Cimato pulled out a 7-5 triumph at 133 pounds. Rutgers regained the momentum with two straight wins by fall to give the Scarlet Knights a 15-3 lead. Senior Billy Haydt halved the lead with a pin at 2:01 in the 157-pound match. At 165 pounds, Matt Pletcher took a 7-0 decision from Drexel's Scott Hunter while Mike Whalen was victorious over Drexel's Brian Stouffer by the same score at 174 pounds. Justin Wieller picked up an 8-6 win at 184 pounds while Oplinger followed with a 9-5 win. At 285 pounds, Dominick Russo outpointed Kyle Frey of Drexel, 9-3.
In the Dragons' second dual of the day, Drexel took on the host school. Lock Haven opened with a pin at 125 pounds and a win by decision at 133 pounds. Matt Dugan put the Dragons on the board with a major decision 16-2 win over Owen Wilkinson. Lock Haven rebounded with a win by fall at 149 pounds and an overitme decision at 157 pounds. Lock Haven iced the match with another win by fall at 165 pounds. Drexel's Brian Stouffer pulled out a 5-1 win at 174 pounds while Wieller was edged, 5-2, at 184 pounds. The Dragons added two more victories as Oplinger picked up a 9-5 win while Frey won 5-0 at 285 pounds.
Drexel closed the Lock Haven Duals on a good note with a victory as Michael Gomez opened the match with an 11-5 decision at 125 pounds. Drexel added six team points with a win by forfeit at 133 pounds. Dugan extended the Dragons' lead with a five-point technical fall over John Menadord to give Drexel a 14-0 advantage. Scott Heckmen emphatically put the Warriors on the scoreboard with a win by fall at 1:41. Haydt picked up three points for the Dragons with a 6-2 win over Jesse Dunn. The Warriors won at 165 pounds but Stouffer won his second match of the day as he topped Nick Tetro, 4-1. At 184 pounds, Shawn Fausey stepped in for Wieller and dropped a close 6-4 decision. Oplinger clinched the Drexel victory with a major decision win over Shane Mallory, 15-5. The Warriors closed the dual with a win at heavyweight.
