
Dragons Defeat Wagner and Cleveland State at Quad Meet

Lewisburg, Pa. - Drexel wrestling closed 2008 on a high note as the Dragons took two of three duals at Bucknell. The Dragons opened the day with a thundering 52-0 triumph over Wagner before being defeated by Bucknell, 25-16. Drexel finished with a solid 28-14 victory over Cleveland State as Head Coach Jack Childs collected his 399th career Division I victory. He is currently the active leader in the category. Eighth-ranked Jon Oplinger was a perfect 3-0 on the day with a pair of wins by fall and a major decision at 197 pounds.
Drexel opened the day with a convincing 52-0 victory over Wagner. Nine of Drexel wrestlers won with bonus points including five pins in the first period. After a Wagner forfeit in the 125 pound match, Frank Cimato started streak of three straight pins by Drexel. The freshman pinned Nick Keshecki at 0:59 before Kyle Palmer won by fall over Ryan Cornell at 1:09. At 149 pounds, Robert Robinson pinned Jake Villaret at 2:05. Dan Konno just missed a win by technical fall when he defeated Nick Dalcero, 15-2, to notch the major decision victory. Scott Hunter edged Sean Quinn, 5-3, in the closest match of the dual. Shawn Fausey won by technical fall with just three seconds remaining in the match while Wieller followed with a 15-2 major decision win at 184 pounds. Oplinger earned the quickest pin of the day for Drexel as he stopped Mark Wagner just 20 seconds into the match. Kyle Frey closed the rout with a pin of his own at 2:20 over VinnyTortorella.
Against Bucknell, the Dragons put themselves in an early hole. Derek Reber earned the Bison five points with a technical fall win over Michael Gomez at 125 pounds while 18th-ranked David Marble also managed a technical fall over Cimato. At 141 pounds, Adam Healey earned a tight 5-4 decision over Matt Dugan before Kevin LeValley pinned Robert Robinson to give Bucknell a 19-0 lead just four matches into the dual. Billy Haydt ignited the Dragons with a win by fall over Tyler Riccio at 1:48 and Hunter followed with an 8-6 decision over Scott Sechler to cut the Bison lead to 19-9. Bucknell put the dual meet away over the next two matches with decisions at 174 and 184 pounds. Oplinger continued his stellar season with a 16-4 major decision win over Jay Hahn. Frey ended the meet with an 8-1 win over Nathan Jones at heavyweight.
A pair of wins by fall highlighted the Dragons' triumph over Cleveland State. Palmer and Oplinger each earned the Dragons six team points to help Drexel seal the 28-14 victory. Palmer's fall was key as Cleveland State held an early 4-3 advantage heading into the 141-pound match. Palmer needed just 50 seconds to give Drexel its first lead of the dual, 9-4. The Vikings came right back with a major decision victory at 149 pounds but Haydt won his second match of the day at 157 pounds to bring Drexel to a 12-8 lead. Cleveland State cut into the Dragons' lead with a win at 165 pounds but Shawn Fausey won a major decision and the Vikings forfeited the 184-pound match. Oplinger sealed the victory with a win by fall at 1:34 to give Drexel its final points of the day.
