Palo Alto, Calif. - Drexel completed a trio of duals at Stanford as the Dragons earned a tie against the Cardinal, 21-21, and dropped matches to Cal State-Bakersfield, 33-9, and UC Davis, 21-19. The tie was the first for Drexel wrestling since the 1993-94 season. Eleventh-ranked Jon Oplinger continued his impressive senior season as he notched three more wins including a win by fall and a major decision victory. Heavyweight Kyle Frey was equally impressive as the sophomore also won all three of his matches.
In the opener, Cal State Bakersfield won the first eight matches to cruise to a 33-9 victory. Oplinger got the Dragons on the board with a pinning of Ernesto Ancona at 3:19. Frey followed with a tough 7-6 triumph over David Morgan. Against UC Davis, Drexel won five of the 10 matches but bonus points by the Aggies were the difference. Three of the Aggies' five victories came with bonus points while Drexel only earned three extra points in Frank Cimato's win by forfeit at 133 pounds. Matt Dugan won his 141-pound match with an 8-4 triumph over Brian Osuna. After UC Davis took the 149-pound bout, Dan Konno managed a 5-2 win over Joey Wilson. The Aggies took the next three matches before Oplinger halted the streak with a 20-8 major decision win over Abe Otrambo. Frey ended the dual with a 2-0 win over Ricky Alcala.
Against the host school, the Dragons won six of the 10 matches but were once again traumatized by opponents' bonus points as three Cardinal wrestlers earned six points each with pins. After Stanford took the 125-pound match, Drexel was ahead 6-3 after Cimato's second win by forfeit. Dugan won his match at 141 pounds with a 3-0 victory over Cameron Teitleman but Stanford picked up six points with a win by fall at 149 pounds to knot the score at 9-9. Billy Haydt regained the lead for Drexel with a 5-4 victory but Stanford used a pin at 165 pounds to give the Cardinal a three-point lead. Brian Stouffer tied the score again as he pulled out a 3-1 overtime win at 174 pounds but once again Stanford earned six points with a pin. With the Dragons down six points with just two matches to go, Oplinger earned a win by decision and Frey followed with the same to earn the Dragons a 21-21 tie.
