St. Louis, Mo. - Steve Mytych and Ryan Hluschak lost hard-fought matches in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Championships. Hluschak lost, 4-3, to eighth-seeded Jordan Leen of Cornell in the first round of the 157-pound championship while Mytych dropped a 3-0 decision to fourth-seeded Tanner Gardner of Stanford.
Hluschak and Leen, in the only first-round match that featured two All-Americans, were scoreless through the first period. With Hluschak starting on the bottom for the second period, both wrestlers were issued a warning for stalling. Seconds later, Hluschak was called for stalling a second time and Leen was awarded a point just before Hluschak escaped to tie the score at 1-1. The score remained knotted into the third period when Leen took a 2-1 lead after an escape. With time winding down, Hluschak earned a takedown to take a brief 3-2 lead before Leen executed a reversal with just 10 second remaining to earn the 4-3 victory. Hluschak will now face ninth-seeded Chase Pami of Cal Poly in the consolation bracket after Pami was upset by Brian Letters of Maryland.
Mytych held Gardner scoreless in the first period but the Stanford wrestler earned a point in the second with an escape and then a takedown to lead, 3-0. Mytych chose to start the third period in a neutral position but was not able to score and will fall into the consolation bracket. Mytych will face Jasen Borschoff of American later in the day.
