Easton, Pa.--Andrew Chapman (Toronto, Ont./Oliver Mowat) scored four times and added an assist as the 12th-ranked Drexel men's lacrosse team defeated Lafayette, 13-6. It was the seventh straight win for the Dragons, who are now 7-1 on the season.
Drexel exploded for four straight goals to start the second quarter as the Dragons took a commanding 8-2 lead. Chapman had two of his goals during that stretch. Lafayette cut the lead to 8-4 late in the quarter but L.C. Moerschel (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) gave the Dragons a five-goal lead when he found the back of the cage with less than a minute to play in the half.
The Dragons scored the first three goals of the game and never trailed in the contest. Kevin Dart (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) opened the scoring at the 7:51 mark of the first quarter. Just eight seconds later, Dennis Murray (Langhorne, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) made it a two goal lead. Colin Ambler (Abington, Pa./Abington), last week's CAA Player of the Week, gave the Dragons a 3-0 lead before the Leopards were able to get on the board. Lafayette scored twice to cut the lead to one, but Brian Neary (Oreland, Pa./La Salle) scored with just two seconds left to put Drexel up 4-2.
Drexel won 13 of the 21 face-offs in the game. Ryan West (Berlin, Md./Decatur) was 6-for-9 on his draw attempts, while Nick Kusturiss (Media, Pa./Penncrest) won four of his six attempts. Ambler finished with a pair of goals and an assist, while Steve Grossi (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) led the team with five ground balls.
The Drexel defense, which entered the game ranked in the top 10 nationally, played well once again. Lafayette managed just 22 shots in the game and scored on one of its four extra-man attempts. Bruce Bickford (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) played 57 minutes in the cage and made five saves before being replaced by Andy Blahut (Linthicum, Md./Boys Latin).
The Dragons conclude their three-game road trip on Tuesday in South Bend, Ind. Drexel will battle Notre Dame, the sixth-ranked team in the nation, at 4 p.m.
