Niagara Falls, N.Y. – The Drexel women's soccer team's second half offensive flurry came up just short as North Dakota defeated Drexel, 1-0, in the Niagara Falls Classic. The Dragons (3-2) outshot the Fighting Sioux (3-3), 22-7, and had numerous opportunities to score in the final 30 minutes of the game, but were shut out for the first time this season.
The Fighting Sioux got on the board early in the second half. Kaitlin Bond saved Sarah Penner's initial shot, but the rebound bounced out to Rachael Loomis, who put the ball past Bond to account for the only goal of the game. Drexel rebounded with a great deal of activity in the North Dakota end. Aleka Yiantsos had three good scoring chances in the span of 10 minutes and Caley Burke hit the crossbar as the Sioux held on to the lead. Daria Bialik had two outstanding opportunities to tie the game with less than 10 minutes left, but both times she narrowly missed the Sioux net.
The teams went to intermission scoreless, but both sides had ample opportunity to score. North Dakota had the game's first scoring chance as Lauren Herrmann broke in on the left side and fired a low shot aimed for the corner. Drexel's Bond made a sprawling save to keep the game scoreless. The Dragons' Yiantsos had three shots in the half, including one that just missed the net midway through the half. Carly Snyder and Jenna Lindsay each had a pair of shots. The Dragons outshot the Sioux, 7-2, during the first 45 minutes, but were unable to get any shots on goal.
Bond made four saves for the Dragons, who conclude play in the tournament on Sunday morning with a match against Albany at 11 a.m.
