Niagara Falls, N.Y. – Aleka Yiantsos had just the second hat trick in Drexel history and also had an assist as the Dragons' offense erupted for three goals in the first half and defeated Albany, 4-1. The Dragons' (4-2) offense fired on all cylinders after being held scoreless in their last outing.
Yiantsos scored her third goal of the game on an attempted cross early in the second half. She fired the ball from the left side in front of the net and her shot hit a defender's foot and the momentum carried the ball into the Great Danes' net. According to the NCAA statistical manual, Yiantsos was credited with the goal that put Drexel ahead, 4-1. The goal moved her into a tie for second place on the Drexel career goal list with 16. Yiantsos is now tied with Laura Meikle, who had the only other hat trick in Drexel history, and Sandra Ackerman.
Yiantsos scored two goals within six minutes of each other midway through the first half. Her first goal came in the 21st minute and gave the Dragons the lead for good at 2-1. She took a nice headed pass from Michelle Donnelly and beat Albany goalkeeper Cate Crenson from right in front of the net. In the 27th minute, Yiantsos wrestled a ball away from an Albany defender right in front of the Great Danes' cage, turned and fired a shot into the corner of the net to put the Dragons up by two goals.
The Dragons' offense started early against the Great Danes. Jenna Lindsay got the Dragons on the board just three minutes into the game as she beat Albany goalkeeper with a hard, low shot. It was the fifth goal of the year for the first-year player from Thorofare, N.J. Yiantsos was credited with the assist on the play, giving her 18 career assists, which extended her own Drexel record.
Albany answered just three minutes later. Ashley Tirabassi fired a shot into the far left corner from just outside the box. Drexel keeper Kaitlin Bond made a diving attempt, but the ball was just out of her reach as Albany tied the contest at 1-1.
The Dragons made the most out of their shot attempts on the sunny morning in Western New York. Drexel was outshot, 15-10, but put almost all of its shots on goal. Five shots were saved by Cate Crenson and four resulted in Dragon goals. Kaitlin Bond made five saves in goal for Drexel as she recorded her fourth win of the year.
