Hofstra Defeats Women's Soccer in Double Overtime, 1-0
9/28/2008 7:43:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Philadelphia – Hofstra (5-4-1, 2-0 CAA) scored on a goal with eight minutes left in the second overtime to defeat Drexel (5-5, 0-2), 1-0. The Pride's Salma Tarik converted a corner kick from teammate Jess Crankshaw for the only goal of the contest.
The Dragons and Pride battled back and forth in the second half after a 40-minute lightning delay. Each team had a number of opportunities to score, but both goalkeepers kept their club in the game. Drexel's Kaitlin Bond, who had a season-high 12 saves, made a pair of big saves in the overtimes. The first came four minutes into the first extra session, when she leaped and deflected a Crankshaw scoring bid. The ball went off Bond's hand and hit the crossbar. Bond made a key save on a break in by Laura Greene early in the second overtime before the Pride was able to get one past the senior keeper.
Drexel's best scoring chances came in the second half. Jenna Lindsay, who finished with five shots, broke in on the right side but was denied by Hofstra's Krystal Robens. Earlier in the half, Lindsay hit the cross bar and teammate Daria Bialik fired a rebound that went over the net.
The Pride opened the game with a flurry. Tarik, who had a number of chances to score throughout the game, received a feed right in front of the Drexel and fired towards the low far corner. Bond dove and got a hand on the ball, which then caromed off the post. The Dragons countered just moments later when Aleka Yiantsos broke in on the left side. She drilled a shot with her left foot that deflected off a Hofstra defender. Robens reacted well and made a sprawling stop to keep the game scoreless. It was one of fives saves on the day for Robens. The Pride, who outshot Drexel, 10-1 in the first half, had one more outstanding opportunity late in the half. Greene picked up a ball deep in the box but her shot hit the post.
The Dragons host a pair of Colonial Athletic Association matches next weekend. Drexel and Old Dominion play on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Vidas Field. On Sunday, the Dragons host William & Mary.
