Philadelphia - No. 12 Drexel rebounded from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Villanova 5-2 at Buckley Field. The Dragons had five different players record goals to complete a sweep of Philadelphia schools for the second consecutive season. Christina Mastropaolo continued her assault on the school record book with two new single-season records while senior co-captain Carolina Gibernau tied a school mark with three assists. The win moved Drexel to 13-2 on the season while the Wildcats dipped to 8-6.
Villanova stunned the hosts with a breakaway goal from Meredith Sabatini a little over 16 minutes into the game. Less than two minutes later, Jordan Freese rocketed a shot off a penalty corner into the cage as the senior continued her outstanding play for the Dragons. It took less than a minute for the Wildcats to regain the lead after Dana Ramsden deflected an Emily Donaldson offering that was sent in from the right side outside the circle. With the half winding down, Bolger took her turn blasting a penalty corner into the cage to tie the score. After the halftime horn blared, the Dragons earned a final penalty corner. Freese fired a shot that was saved by the helmet of goalie Megan Goele as she laid on the turf. Mastropaolo found the loose rebound and finished the play to give Drexel a 3-2 edge into the break.
The goal gave the junior her 48th and 49th points of the season as she established a new school single-season record set last year by teammate Susan Ciufo. The goal also broke another school mark as the score was a game-winning score, Mastropaolo's seventh of the season shattering Pamie Zukowski mark of six. Mastropaolo is now tied with Loren Scherer for the most game-winning goals in the nation this season.
The second half saw Drexel dominate the action as the Dragons outshot the Wildcats, 9-3. Amanda Fleischut registered her first career goal as she dribbled into the circle and found little resistance as she pushed a shot through the legs of Goele. Ciufo added the final score of the game as she took a Carolina Gibernau pass and ripped a shot into the net.
Drexel returns to action on Wednesday for its final non-conference game of the season as the Dragons host Lafayette at 7:00 p.m.
