College Park, Md. - The Drexel Field Hockey team will face Big East champion UConn in a first round match-up at the 2009 NCAA Championship. The Dragons will play after the other first round game of the region that pits No. 1 Maryland against American. The opening game will start at 11:30 a.m. while the Dragons are scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14.
The Dragons and Huskies met earlier in the season with UConn pulling away late after the teams were deadlocked at 2-2 with 15 minutes remaining. Junior Susan Ciufo scored both of Drexel's goals in the game. The forward has 21 goals this season and was a First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association selection for the second straight season. Fellow First Teamer Carolina Gibernau leads the Drexel midfield. The senior broke her own school record this season with 13 assists. Fellow Uruguyan Sofia Sanguinetti keys the Drexel defense. The sophomore was selected as the CAA Defender of the Year while freshman Jenna Phillips was a Second Team All-CAA pick in the cage. The Dragons will look to slow down the NCAA's top scorer in Loren Scherer. She currently is the nation's leader in goals and points. She helped lead the Huskies to an upset of top-seeded Syracuse in the Big East Tournament.
