Camden, N.J. - Drexel Crew sent seven boats to race in the 2009 Frostbite Regatta with six of the seven crossing the line ahead of every other entrant as the Dragons began their final fall weekend with eye-opening results. The Dragons won both the men's and women's novice eight races as well as both varsity eight competitions on the Cooper River.
The Dragons' big day started when the Annette Pennoni (stroke Filip Topolovic, Jake Sloan, Marty Khait, Mike Gartland, Mike Golden, Pat McGann, Andrew Burns, Peter Schmidt and cox Randall Lee) raced off to victory in a junior varsity eight final by more than five seconds as the boat crossed at 6:29.72 to defeat second-place Temple and third-place Temple. The next race was another junior varsity eight competition and another victory for a Drexel boat. The Peggy Greenawalt (stroke Nick Buyse, Gregg Francis, Mike Mabkhouti, Steve Dove, Kevin Rorabaugh, Tim Scattergood, Aziz Maalik, Peter Eyrich and cox Michelle Lehmann) cruised to a 15-second victory with a time of 6:41.13 to top La Salle, Ithaca and Scranton.
In novice eight racing, Drexel continued to roll. The women's eight in the Anna Marie (stroke Natasha Martines, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Samantha Cowan, Hayley Tintle, Kathie Cheng, Brogan Piecara, Natalie Launchi and cox Mary Beth Geyer) posted a time of 7:55.96 to take the race over second-place UMass by more than 10 seconds. The men were challenged a bit more in their race but the Dragons' men's novice eight prevailed in the Joseph Greipp (stroke Zach Antunes, Jason Browne, Tim Drake, Eric Szendrey, Paul Wisniowski, Lorenzo Albala, Kurt Linton, Adam Cordi and cox Matt Weston). The boat crossed with a time of 6:30.32 to outlast Delaware who clocked a 6:31.47. Drexel's time was more than 30 seconds better than third-place Marietta in what turned out to be a two-boat race.
The Dragons had their win streak snapped when the John Daskalakis (stroke Taylor Mondak, Moira Fleming, Brooke Wertan, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Asiya Mahmud, Jillian Skovran, Chloe Swansen and cox Alex Paulin) placed third as Drexel's second varsity eight. The women's top varsity eight faced stiff competition in its race but the Marlene Buckley (stroke Candice Webb, Mallory Sykes, Julia Jackson, Dana Haneman, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Cassie Clawson, Mary Kain and cox Cate Khella) was up to the task. Drexel crossed the line more than nine seconds ahead of second-place Temple with the Dragons' recording a time of 7:15.47. The boat also toppled Lafayette by more than 31 seconds and Philadelphia University by more than 47 seconds. The men's varsity eight followed suit when they won their race in the Vince Vidas (stroke Aleksander Radovic, Greg Pierce, Ernesto Del Valle, Kyle Fabel, Anthony Fittipaldi, Chris Hillenbrand, Liam O'Neill, Will Masters and cox Steve Matyas) over Lafayette, Penn State and West Virginia. The boat's time of 6:25.54 won by more than 17 seconds to complete the Dragons' big day.
Drexel Crew will wrap up the fall season on Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Bill Braxton Regatta on the Schuylkill River.
