College Park, Md. - Gabriela Marginean put together her third straight double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, but her Dragons (2-2) came up short of RV/RV Maryland (6-1) in an 82-65 loss on the road. Drexel led the contest midway through the first half and remained within striking distance for the majority of the contest. An eight-point spurt by Jasmina Rosseel in the second half brought Drexel within eight points with just under three and a half minutes to play. But Maryland closed out the game with an 11-2 run, including eight trips to the free-throw line to pull away for their 42nd straight home win.
Marisa Crane finished the contest with a career high eight points and eight assists. Kamile Nacickaite chipped in 13 points, including three three-pointers, and Jasmina Rosseel finished with 10 points and four boards. Freshman Taylor Wootton energized the Dragons off the bench with a career-best eight points and excellent post defense against a physically imposing Terrapin team.
Maryland outrebounded Drexel 40-27, but the Dragons did well to keep the Terps off the offensive glass, allowing just seven offensive boards, which equated to 10 second-chance points. Maryland's 25-31 performance from the free-throw line also helped give the Terrapins an advantage as the Dragons shot just seven free-throws in the contest and only two in the second half. The Terrapins went to the free-throw line on five of Drexel's first six fouls in the second half and converted all but one of their 10 attempts.
Maryland edged Drexel in shooting from the floor, 49 percent to 41.9 percent and both teams made seven three-pointers. Transfer senior Lori Bjork led Maryland's with 19 points on 6-for-10 shooting and four three-pointers. Rookie Diandra Tchatchouang added 18 points and five rebounds.
The teams played a tight contest through the first 10 minutes, with Drexel getting many of the offensive looks it wanted early in the proceeding. A three-pointer by Marginean at the 11:56 mark gave Drexel it's only lead of the contest 19-18. Maryland countered with a 7-0 spurt, but Marginean again answered the call with a layup while being fouled for a three-point play to cut the Terps' lead to 25-22 at the 9:29 mark.
Maryland used a 15-3 run capped by a Bjork three-pointer gave Maryland a cushion that it would not relinquish for the duration of the contest. The Dragons went into the locker room trailing 45-35 with Maryland's decisive rebounding advantage as the difference in the contest. The Terps pulled in 21 boards to Drexel's 16 and converted five offensive rebounds into eight second-chance points, which swung the balance in an otherwise even contest. Marginean put in a team-high 13 points in the first half and pulled down five rebounds. The Dragons shot 45.2 percent in the half. Maryland, led by Lori Bjork's 4-for-6 performance shot 50 percent from the floor.
The confluence of a 2-for-7 shooting start for the Dragons and seven free throws on eight trips to the line for the Terrapins did little to help Drexel's chance of a comeback in the onset of the second half. But despite trailing by as much as 14 points in the opening minutes, the Dragons had one more run left in them.
Jasmina Rosseel found her shooting touch to connect for a pair of three pointers from the left wing and when the defense collapsed on her, she used a dribble-drive jumper to slash Maryland's lead to 62-54 with just over nine minutes left. A three-pointer by Hollie Mershon coming off the bench followed by a steal by Marginean that resulted in a pair of free-throws again drew the margin to eight points, 71-63, with 3:23 to play.
But seconds later Lori Bjork would curl around a series of screens to open space for her fourth three-pointer of the contest, effectively signaling Drexel's demise.
Crane's eight assists were the most for a Dragon since Nicole Hester dished out eight on Jan. 20, 2008 against UNC Wilmington. This is just the second time in Marginean's career that she has posted three straight double-doubles.
The Dragons return to the DAC for a game against American on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
