Philadelphia - Home fans will get their first chance to cheer on Drexel's new career scoring leader Gabriela Marginean as the Dragons return to play at the DAC against American tonight for the first time since the senior forward broke the record on Nov. 20. Drexel opens up a month-long Philadelphia homestand in which the Dragons will play four of their next five games at the DAC and nine straight in the City of Brotherly Love. Tonight's contest tips off at 7:00 p.m.
The Dragons are coming back after an 82-65 loss at Maryland on Sunday. The Terrapins, who received votes in both the AP and coaches top 25 poll this week, did their best to pull away early in the first half. But Drexel held steady and was able to put together a run of its own midway through t he first half to pull ahead 19-18 with just over 11 minutes to play. Gabriela Marginean scored 13 of her team-high 17 points in the first half and helped Drexel stay within 10 points at the break. While Maryland would use 26 second-half free throws to help pull away from the Dragons, Drexel fans still saw a number of strong performances from their team. Sophomore guard Marisa Crane dished out a career-high eight assists against one turnover and matched her career high with eight points. Kamile Nacickaite put in 13 points on 3-for-4 shooting from deep. And Taylor Wootton came off the bench to energize the team with her defense, while also knocking down shots to reach a career scoring high of eight points.
American enters tonight's contest with a 2-2 record and coming off a 73-72 loss to Wagner on Sunday. The Eagles are led by reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Michelle Kirk. The 6-foot junior forward is leading her conference in scoring, at 21.3 points per contest, and shooting a sizzling .438 percent from deep. Kirk was Preseason First Team All-Conference selection and is one of three returning starters from last year's team that went 19-12 and finished second in the league under first year head coach Matt Corkery.
This is the 13th meeting between Drexel and American and the fourth time in as many years. The Eagles lead the all-time series 8-4 and won last year's contest 74-65 in Washington, D.C. in Drexel's season opener.
Tonight's game can be heard live on WKDU 91.7 FM, Drexel's student-run radio station, as well as on live audio at www.drexeldragons.com.
