Philadelphia - Fresh of an historic weekend win at Saint Joseph's the Drexel Dragons will welcome a red-hot Princeton Tigers team to the DAC for a 7:00 p.m. contest tonight. Head coach Denise Dillon will be recognized for recording her 100th career coaching win and senior forward Gabriela Marginean will be honored for scoring her 2,000th career point in a ceremony prior to tonight's game. Both milestones were achieved in Drexel's 71-69 win over city rival Saint Joseph's on Sunday.
The Princeton Tigers enter tonight's contest with a 7-2 overall record and winners of four of their last five games. The Tigers' only losses this season have come to national powers UCLA and Rutgers and they are coming off of an 80-47 thrashing of Lafayette last Saturday. Princeton features a young core of talent, led by freshman Niveen Rasheed, who is the Tigers' leader in scoring, rebounds and assists. Princeton does not have a senior in the starting lineup and four of the five starters are under-classmen.
The Dragons are coming off of one of their most puzzling victories of the season. After jumping out to a 16-0 lead to start the game and expanding it to as much as 29 points early in the second half, Saint Joseph's caught fire to make it a one-possession game by the waning seconds of the ball game. Gabriela Marginean, who scored a game-high 26 points, was called up on to hit two key free-throws in the last 10 seconds to secure a narrow Drexel victory. The Dragons shot 61.5 percent in the first half, which was their best shooting period of the season. But it nearly went unrewarded as the Hawks poured in 51 second-half points in a tenacious comeback bid. In addition to Marginean's performance, Jasmina Rosseel and Kamile Nacickaite each knocked down four three-pointers in the team's best long-distance shooting exhibition of the season.
Tonight's game will be the sixth meeting between Drexel and Princeton. The Tigers lead the all-time series 4-1, but this will be the first time the squads have tipped it up in nearly 17 years. Their last meeting came on Dec. 5, 1992 when Princeton narrowly edged Drexel 79-75 at the Ivy Challenge Tournament.
Tickets for tonight's game are available at the DAC ticket office or at the door for $6. Student admission is free admission with a valid Drexel ID. Fans can also follow the game on livestats by clicking here or listen online with Pat Delsi and Mike Mazzeo calling the action.
