Villanova, Pa. – Freshmen Chris Fouch and Derrick Thomas combined for 43 points, but third-ranked Villanova defeated Drexel at the Pavilion on Wednesday night, 77-58.
Thomas led all players with a career-high 23 points and was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Fouch added a career-best 20 points, nailed five three-pointers and also had four assists. Samme Givens chipped in with nine points and a team-best 10 rebounds. Drexel (3-5) made 11 of 23 from behind the three-point stripe, but shot just 31 percent overall in the game.
The Wildcats (7-0) opened up a 28-point lead in the second half and kept the lead at 20 or more points until the final minutes. Antonio Pena led the Wildcats with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor King added 16, while Scottie Reynolds scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds and handed out six assists.
The Dragons were held scoreless for almost 10 minutes to start the game as Villanova opened an 11-0 lead. Derrick Thomas hit a three-pointer at the 10:19 mark to break the ice after Drexel failed on its first 13 field-goal attempts. The Dragons got back in the game as Chris Fouch knocked down a pair of three-pointers to cut it to 18-13 with 4:49 remaining in the half. However, the Wildcats extended their lead to 16 at the break as King made three treys in the final five minutes of the half. King had 12 points in the first half, while Pena also had a big half with nine points, seven of them coming from the free throw line. Drexel held the Wildcats to just 32 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes, but managed to make just seven of its 31 attempts from the floor.
Drexel opens Colonial Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Northeastern at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
