Philadelphia - Drexel's 69-58 win over Loyola yesterday earned the Dragons (6-4) a berth in the Villanova Wildcat Classic Championship game tonight and the chance to face the host Wildcats for just the second time ever and the first time since Villanova alumna Denise Dillon has been head coach at Drexel. The Wildcats advanced to the championship game by virtue of a 67-35 dismantlng of San Francisco in yesterday's nightcap.
The Dragons turned in their best shooting performance of the season, knocking down exactly half of their shots from the floor, led by Kamile Nacickaite's 16 points in the first half and Gabriela Marginean's 15 in the second. Marginean finished with a 25-point, 11-rebound double-double, her third of the season, and Nacickaite capped an 18-point evening with six rebounds and a pair of steals in 40 minutes of play. Senior guard Alison Lupariello came off the bench in the final five minutes to hit a big three-pointer that stifled an 8-0 Greyhounds run. She also knocked down a pair of free throws in the final minute to ice the game.
Villanova used a 27-5 run in the second half to open an insurmountable lead in its rout of San Francisco in yesterday's late game. Laura Sweeney, Emily Suhey and Megan Pearson combined to score 40 of Villanova's 67 points. Villanova drained seven of its 10 three-pointers in the second half while shooting better than 53 percent in the period. The Wildcats are now 9-2 on the season entering tonight's game.
Drexel's only other meeting with Villanova in its history of Div. I basketball came exactly 10 years ago to the day, on Dec. 29, 1999, also in the Wildcat Classic Tournament that year. Villanova won the game 66-40 to advance to the tournament championship.
Tonight's contest is the first meeting between Drexel Head Coach Denise Dillon, a 1996 Villanova graduate, and her former coach and mentor Harry Perretta and a reunion of sorts for many Dragons and Wildcats. Dillon, who was a four-time All-Big East selection on the Main Line from 1992-96, helped Perretta's Wildcats finish 21-7 as a senior in 1996. On Perretta's staff as an assistant that year was Drexel's current Associate Head Coach Amy Mallon. This year's Wildcat squad features junior center Heather Scanlon, the younger sister of Drexel great Catherine Scanlon, who finished her playing career in 2006 as one of the Dragons' all-time leaders in scoring, rebounding, assists steals and three-pointers.
